I'll only say this because I'm reading a book of fairytales atm; but it's suddenly struck me that this might be something like the people of long ago imagined diabolical musicians would look like (You know, the sort of stories where a bride and groom insist on dancing into the Sabbath, but the regular musicians won't play, so a band of demons appears and dooms the wedding party to dance until they die of exhaustion).
