So, checked the temperature this morning, 2C, right, looked out the window, everything is wet, right, I'd been hearing rain. Nothing unusual for a German February.
Grabbed my stuff, backpack, bottle of tea, thermo mug of coffee, headed out to the garage.
The first three steps (of the staicase outside) were no problem. They are under the overhang of the roof.
The next step, I noticed something was off.
On the last step I was already falling.
Full on, slapstick, you've seen it in the funny movies, ground completely iced over, legs and arms up in the air, falling.
Hit the ground with my butt, the stairs with both elbows, middle back and back of my head.
What had happened was that it was down to -7C during the night, so when the 'warm' rain started in the morning it froze on the ground. And just looked wet, not frozen, 'cause the uppermost layer was running water. Water running on the ice underneath.
So, standing up was not possible, it was 'proverbial glassy' (ok, this is a literal translation from German, hope you get what I mean. If anyone has a better turn of phrase, tell me please!) and I ended up sledding on my butt (no worries, well padded, I have bioprene) to the garage, where the salt and the flamethrower are stored. Went and de-iced the stairs and drive.
By the time it was possible to reach the road, an ambulance arrived. My neighbour had called in when she saw me do my slapstick comedy fall, but being an old lady didn't brave the ice herself.
They insisted I come with, because history of traumatic brain injury, torn tendons/joint capsules and broken arms/shoulders (the ambulance driver was a relative). I insisted I was going to change pants first, mine were soaked, and wasn't doing the 'sit wet in ER' thing again (been there, done that (in a swimsuit), had the neoprene cut off me)
Anyway, will have impressive hematomas and shouldn't strain my elbows for a bit, but no other damage. Sadly I couldn't get them to MRI my wonky ankle while they had me in the machine doing my head, so have to go get that done at it's appointment this afternoon...
Stay safe!

Poor you, and still you have been so lucky, I shudder only to think what might have happened to you!
I hope they X-rayed you and found nothing broken or damaged. It is enough to have these painful hematoma. And the elbow is such a tricky thing...oh my, oh my! and what about the ankle?
How are you feeling? I hope you have some painkillers... *HUGS*

Yeah, right now just hematoma, stiffness, feeling old... ;)
And the ankle got MRI'd in the afternoon, arthritis, bursitis, joint capsula damaged, bone edema *sigh*

Mind you - these are the cases we "mature ones" discover that our bodies are worn down...

I've seen this - when I was in college one morning the sidewalks and roadways all just looked wet - I was sitting in my dorm room, looking out the window - and saw SO many people come jogging out of the woods and step onto the road way and just SLIDE. Or they opened the front door and walked out and took 3 steps before faceplanting.
So glad your neighbour saw and had the smarts to NOT come out - but call for help!

That's what I said, if she'd come out and brocken her hip, femoral neck, arm, the lot!
