I think it's a very good idea, but unfortunately, that it would have worked better ten years ago as far as LOTR is concerned
Sadly, my own personal feeling is that the 'ship' has sailed!
The wonderful friends I've made through LJ/DW have, in the main, endured, but it's friendship that links us now, not the interest in fandom.
As one of the very few who continued to write until last year, I've watched interest in our fandom decline year on year, and now I feel that the majority of readers who are left are friends who stick around to be kind, rather than because of any keen fandom involvement.
Of course, that's only one fandom, I'm sure there are many others that would benefit greatly from this kind of approach.
